The French Bridge of Trikala

Historic landmark connecting the old and new town of Trikala over the Lithaios River.

Galliki Gefyra Trikalon

Built between 1886 and 1888 by French engineers of the Thessalian Railways company, the bridge was constructed to unite the two banks of the Lithaios River, connecting the old and the new parts of Trikala. Its design resembled the bridges of the Seine, while its metal components were specially ordered from France and transported via Volos — a reminder of the era when the people of Trikala watched their city modernize under the influence of European innovation.

The “French Bridge” is not merely a crossing point – it is a living piece of history, a place filled with memories.

Listed historic monument

Since 1996, it has been designated as a listed historic monument, and since 1997, it has been fully pedestrianized. In 2015, it was renovated and enhanced with architectural lighting, further elevating its aesthetic presence and transforming the crossing into a unique walking experience in the heart of the city.

In the late afternoon, as the first lights embrace its iron curves, the bridge takes on an almost romantic atmosphere — ideal for photographs, or simply for relaxing and gazing at the gentle flow of the Lithaios River.

Starting point for exploration

The bridge serves as a classic meeting spot and a starting point for city walks. To the north, lies the old town of Trikala, with neighborhoods such as Manavika and Varousi, as well as the Fortress and the Clock Tower. To the south, right at the edge of the bridge, begins Asklipiou Street, the most vibrant and bustling pedestrian avenue of Trikala.

Just a few meters west of the “French Bridge” stands a modern pedestrian bridge, built in 1998 — the Asklipiou Bridge — alongside the statue of Asclepius, the ancient Greek god of medicine. There, the sound of the artificial waterfall blends harmoniously with the urban landscape, reminding visitors that Trikala is a city that honors its past while looking toward the future.
